World Of Work

Engineering

"Half of the time you're sitting on the edge of your seat, hoping things are going to work, but it's hard to put into words the feeling you get at the end of it"

Flight Engineer – Female

Only 8% of those working in engineering are female.

Engineering can cover a host of different jobs:

  • Civil engineer
They are involved in the designing, building and maintaining structures such as roads, bridges, airports. Civil engineers are normally part of one of many teams working on gig projects, planning designing and construction for transport, natural resources and industry.
  • Chemical engineer
They are involved with changes in materials in chemical and physical ways; solving problems with chemicals. Chemical engineers work in food processing, brewing, manufacturing (anything from paracetamol to paint and fuel)
  • Mechanical engineer
They are involved in designing and producing moving machine parts ranging from bikes and toys to spaceships and cruise liners. So they are involved in almost everything that is designed and made.

Being good with people, having a second language, good at planning, technical drawing, science and maths are all desirable skills. Engineering is such a huge area with so many different kinds of jobs! But you do not have to be male!

Many very talented software engineers end up in jobs they never thought they would. Gary Shipman was one of those who left Uni not knowing where he was going until he was offered to develop Polyphonic ring tones software for a major online ring tones retailer. Gary is now holding a very senior post within this company so well done Gary and we wish you all the best for the future.

Energy efficient engineering in the UK leads the European markets in the turbine efficiency industry with recent manufacturing of water injection systems and the manufacturing of UK Gas Turbines on an industrial scale. Engineering in this sector has the added benefits of keeping within European environmental legislation. Many different forms of engineering are applied in this industry.

Many engineers will find at some point in their career that they will be freelancing or working as an engineering contractor. For these finding the right umbrella company is an essential part of their career decision. Finding a PAYE solution which specialises in engineering is possible if you hunt around. Male or female, this is the umbrella service for you.

As an engineer you will have the opportunity to use the very best quality tools and materials that are avialable on the market. Stanley Bostitch tools and air compressors are highly popular with many engineers and others invloved in the cosntrcution industry due to their reliablity, durablity and quality.

Engineering covers a host of different subjects such as civil, mechanical and chemical. A mechanical engineer would design, construct and operate machinery such as an plastic injection moulding machine whereas a chemical engineer would concentrate on the practice of turning raw materials such as oil into a variety of different products.

It takes a team of engineers and designers to engineer a technically complex sports car. There isn't anything complicated about entering a car competition though. With BOTB you can win fast, expensive super cars which you wouldn't normally be able to afford! Play to win one of several sports car prizes.

Finding an engineering job need not be hard work these days. There are plenty of job sites around that have a range of engineerng jobs and career advice, your local job centre online web site will display job ads if you do a simple search for the type you want like \\\"Mechanical engineer jobs in Manchester\\\" or \\\" Civil engineering jobs in Birmingham\\\". Engineering a great career.

Construction crime is estimated to cost the industry £400m per year. It is not just the money that is lost, the disruption, the hassle and delays in contracts are always affected. Metals such as aluminium and copper are constantly increasing in price construction sites have become very lucrative for thieves out to produce quick cash Mobile CCTV Units can monitor as many threats at one time, unlike some systems that will detect just one per time the radar will show the monitoring station and prioritise the camera or enable manual mode by the watch tower.

Working hours

Engineering is often project based which can mean the hours that are worked, the days that are worked and the times that people start and finish vary greatly depending on the project and its demands.

What qualifications do I need?

Different types and levels of qualifications may be required depending on the area you would like to enter, and are especially helpful for Apprenticeships.

What's the pay like?

Pay varies hugely depending on the area of work and whether training or qualified. Engineering technicians can expect to earn on average around £27,000. A newly graduated civil engineer or architect will start on about £20,000 per year which can rise to over £45,000 over time. A chartered surveyor can start on £15,000 and top salaries can be over £100,000.

Office jobs just didn’t appeal to me. I remember my careers test saying I should be a hairdresser!
